It’s just like a film photographer to be posting Fall break photos on New Years Day.
For Fall break, the kids and I had to leave their dad behind due to the hurricane changing our 4 day trip plans to the following weekend. Having already scheduled our airbnb (which ended up being amazing despite the craziness of rescheduling), I decided we’d make the most of it anyway so I loaded up a car full and lots of film and headed through some small towns in the South (the kind you cannot stop for bathroom breaks) to finally make it into Seaside and 30A. Having grown up at the beaches of North Carolina, this was admittedly our first time at the Gulf and we instantly fell in love.
These aren’t all the photos I took, but I was determined to capture Rosemary Beach on black and white. This was my first truly successful roll to come off my new to me Minolta Maxxum 7000 I grabbed on Ebay about a month or so before. For a $30ish dollar point and shoot I’m entirely smitten with the results. It’s even better that the prior owner made sure to tell me that this was the camera his father took all their childhood photos on. I mean it just doesn’t get much better than that.
This year I’ve been working hard on themes in my work that make me really happy and also speak to who I am as an artist. Needless to say, it’s everywhere here. Amplified by the power of black and white. These were all taken on Ilford Delta 400 and I’m instantly in love with this combination. On this day we hit up Rosemary in the late morning and it was crazy hot. Not too long into our walk around there we headed back to Seaside and into the ocean to cool off. Can’t wait to see all the color of this world as well but for now I’m loving on all the monotone goodness. I will never tire of black and white film. There are so many days I think to myself I’d like to only shoot in black and white but I guess that’s for another blog post one day.
This year i have a huge desire to get back to personal work alongside client work. My first jumpstart to this will be with a group of both old and new film friends taking on a monthly film project. I can’t wait to get started and share in this space.
Looking forward to 2020 with a steadfast vision and I feel better than I have in a really long time. Happy New Year!
