WHY DOCUMENTARY?
Family documentary photography is in its truest form photojournalism in your home. It is 100% hands off and allows the unique perspective of a day in your life completely and totally unscripted and with zero manipulation. I have spent years documenting my own family in this way which naturally fell into something I wanted to share with others.
The documentary genre of photography is meant to be a story of your life in this moment and time. These are the photos I most treasure and my passion grows every day in sharing this with other families.
“Photography, alone of the arts, seems perfected to serve the desire humans have for a moment - this very moment - to stay.”
— Sam Abell
WHat to expect?
Day In The Life sessions take the stress out of “preparing”
The first step is a phone or video consult after booking to discuss what you’d like out of your session with me. It is always my goal to help you get what you are looking for out of our time together. I LOVE seeing your face and interacting before our time together.
On our scheduled day, I’ll arrive on your doorstep just like an old friend ready for whatever unfolds during your daily routine.
There is not much for you to do but be yourselves.
Make breakfast in your slippers, wipe crumbs off your toddlers face not because he needs to “smile at the camera” but rather because that is your after breakfast routine.
Let them wear their favorite super hero shirt. Let them take a nap with their loveys. Drink your coffee. BE YOU.
At the end of the day these photos will represent exactly who you are in your own home at exactly this moment in time.
HOW DO I PREPARE FOR PORTRAITS?
Portraits hold a special place in my heart. I’ve always been drawn to capturing people exactly as they are. In today’s world where we are bombarded by perfect images everywhere we look, it is my belief that when we allow our children (or ourselves) to see themselves in their natural element playing or being exactly who they are has a far greater impact.
Because I shoot your child being themselves and doing what they love, there is nothing more you need to prepare for.
If you’d like to make sure a special lovey or clothing item is captured, make sure it is ready for the day.
why film?
(Analog) Film is how I began in photography. There is a special look and feel to film that is hard to duplicate.
It can be described as nostalgic, colorful, creative and timeless all in one sentence.
You might wonder in today’s world why I shoot film and bring it to all my sessions. I think there is a beautiful quality to images captured on film that is hard to duplicate. I love the way film captures light, I love the softness of grain on 35mm, the richness of color, and the experimental nature of the medium. Shooting film encourages me to slow down and stay present in the moment.
Images seem more real to me with film so don’t be surprised when I show up with a collection of cameras ready to capture your day.
With film, there is an honesty to images that is magical.
